São Pedro do Sul is a city ( Cidade ) in Portugal. The place is famous for its thermal baths.

History

1985 excavations demonstrate the scale of the Romans here extensive facilities in the thermal baths, the place was called after their name Balneum long. Even Portugal's first king, D.Afonso Henriques, appreciate the healing power of the local springs, and gave the place in 1152 first city rights ( Foral ). The previously mentioned Banhos place called henceforth the Vila do Banho, and is still the seat of its own circle. After the capture of Badajoz in 1169 recovered the injured D.Afonso Henriques here for a while. His presence led to a lively development of the town, whose sources henceforth demanded recognition and were visited by many former nobles.

King Manuel I was here the hospital the Hospital Real de Caldas Lafões: build ( dt Royal Infirmary of the Baths of Lafões ) and extended in 1515, the city rights of the place, after he had recovered himself in the place. 1884 built the city council ( Câmara Municipal) new facilities of the hospital and the bathrooms. 1894 here recovered the Portuguese Queen Amélie d' Orléans, and since 1895 the place was called Caldas da Rainha D. Amélia (German: Baths of Queen Amélia ).

As a result of the proclamation of the Portuguese Republic in 1910 the town received its present name. In 1987, the place new thermal facilities, and in 2001 the modernized original Caldas da Rainha D. Amélia were reopened. They were, inter alia, expanded to include a museum and conference center. The number of visitors to the thermal baths continued to rise, and were in 2012 more than 25,000 guests a year.

The place was levied 2009 Cidade (City).

São Pedro do Sul is the administrative seat of the homonymous district ( concelho ) in the district of Viseu. June 30, 2011 had the circle 16,935 inhabitants in an area of 349 km ².

The neighboring districts are (clockwise starting from the north ): Castro Daire, Viseu, Vouzela, Oliveira de Frades, Vale de Cambra and Arouca.
