Sariñena

Sariñena is the capital of Valle Monegros in the Spanish province of Huesca. Situated between the rivers Alcanadre and Río Flumen in a plane with cereals cultivation, touched by the railway line from Tardienta to Lleida place on 1 January 2013 had 4323 inhabitants. The municipality is composed of the nuclei Sariñena, La Cartuja de Monegros, Lastanosa, La Masadera, La Estación, Pallaruelo de Monegros and San Juan del Flumen.

History

In and around Sariñena in Roman times there were agricultural settlements, of which many remains are still present. The in 1100 reconquered from the Moors place was in the Middle Ages in the area of irrigation systems ( " acequias " ) and was a prosperous center of cereal farming.

During the Civil War the area was initially controlled by the Republicans in the part of Spain. South Sariñenas, on the border with Albalatillo, founded in the beginning of the fighting an airfield, which was especially used by Polikarpov I- 15 fighter aircraft of the Red Army. In the course of Aragon offensive, the area fell in March 1938 to the National Spaniards. Sariñena served from the end of March 1938, the German Condor Legion for about two months as a basis, among other things, Heinkel He 45 reconnaissance aircraft. Subsequently, the Italian Aviazione Legionaria use the course to the end of the war. Residues including a few hundred meters long concrete runway still exist.
