Velké Meziříčí

Velké Meziříčí ( German United Meseritsch ) is a city in the Czech Republic with 11,753 inhabitants ( 1 January 2004). It is 425 m above sea level. M. in a valley of Krischanauer mountain country ( Křižanovská Highlands ) in the south of the Bohemian- Moravian Highlands at the confluence of Oslava and Balinka and belongs to the Okres Zdar nad Sázavou.

History

The first written mention dates back to 1236, since 1408, the former village received city rights. The historic center of the city at the foot of the originally Gothic castle has been declared an urban conservation. In the city is located next to a castle and the cathedral of Saint Nicholas and the original Gothic Town Hall, the Lutheran High School, built in Renaissance style, a synagogue and partly preserved castle walls. Nearby there is also a Jewish cemetery from the 16th century. On 7 May 1945, there was in the United Meseritsch a massacre of Czech civilians in which 50 people died.
