Castel di Tora

Castel di Tora is a municipality in the province of Rieti in the Italian region Latium, located about 292 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012). The village is located about 60 km northeast of Rome.

By 1864, he was called Castelvecchio and then after the ( supposedly) located here ancient city Torah renamed the Sabines.

Geography

The town is located on a peninsula in the lake Lago del Turano, which is crossed by Turano, and grouped around a medieval castle. He is a member of the Comunità Montana del Turano.

Castel di Tora was included in the list of the most beautiful villages in Italy.

History

The castle was mentioned in 1035 for the first time in a document of the monastery of Farfa under the name Castrum Vetus de Ophiano. 1092 was the area around the castle to the powerful abbey of Farfa together with the adjacent Castrum Antoni (now ruins on Monte Antuni ). Both castles were, however, well established since the 10th century as a defense against the Saracens.

1241 Castelvecchio was confiscated by Frederick II. After the battle of Tagliacozzo (50 km south-east ) of the last Staufer Conradin fled on 23 August 1268 the castle Castelvecchio. As a result, the castle came to the counts Mareri. 1440 followed owned the Orsini, 1558 and 1634 Estouteville the Borghese. In contrast, the Castel Antuni belonged to the Brancaleoni and from the 18th century, the Del Drago.

1935-1938 the Lago del Turano was dammed. However, it disappeared the most fertile soils of the region, which led to a migration of the population. Today, however, the lake plays an important role in tourism, which developed into the most important economic sector.

1944, the Castel Antuni was bombed during the advance of the Allies and completely left the place around the Palazzo del Drago of the population. In 1992, the Palazzo del Drago has been restored and furnished in a clinic for drug addicts.

Castel di Tora has a partnership with the French community Oingt in the Rhône department.

Festivals

  • On the first Sunday after Ash Wednesday, the Sagra del Polentone takes place.
  • On the first Sunday in October, the Sagra degli Strigliozzi takes place. Strigliozzi is a handmade noodle specialty.
