Montasola

Montasola is a municipality with 420 inhabitants (as at 31 December 2012) in the province of Rieti in the Italian region of Lazio.

Geography

Montasola located 74 km north of Rome, 33 km west of Rieti, and 30 km south of Terni. It is situated on a steep hill, visible from afar in the Sabine mountains. At the foot of the hill lies the district of Forcella. The municipality covers an altitude difference 260-1260 m slm Montasola is a member of the Comunità Montana Sabina IV Zona.

The municipality is located in the seismic zone 2 (medium endangered).

The neighboring municipalities are Casperia, Contigliano Cottanello, Torri in Sabina and Vacone.

Traffic

The nearest motorway exit is Ponzano Soratte on the A1 Autostrada del Sole 22 km. The nearest railway station is on the railway line Contigliano Terni - Sulmona in 17 km distance.

History

Archaeological finds prove the colonization of its territory since ancient times. Along a road route tombs were found. A villa rustica continued to be used under the name Curtis de Lauri in the Middle Ages and developed before 936 of the abbey of Farfa to Castellum de Lori. In 1191 the population was summarized in a castrum on the Monte Asola, which belonged directly to the Holy See. In the 14th and 15th century Montasola belonged alternately to the Orsini and Savelli before 1501 again fell to the Apostolic Chamber. 1853 Montasola was an independent municipality since 1927 and belongs to the province of Rieti.
