Monteleone Sabino

Monteleone Sabino is a municipality with 1217 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the province of Rieti in the Italian region of Lazio.

Geography

Monteleone is located 61 km northeast of Rome and 25 km south of Rieti. It is located in the Sabine hills between the valleys of the Turano and Farfa. The municipality belongs to the district of Ginestra Sabina. The municipality covers an altitude difference of 264-900 m asl Monteleone is a member of the Comunità Montana dei Monti Sabini.

The municipality is located in the seismic zone 2 (medium endangered).

The neighboring municipalities are Frasso Sabino, Poggio Moiano, Poggio San Lorenzo Rocca Sinibalda and Torricella in Sabina.

Traffic

Monteleone is located on Via Salaria SS 4 which leads from Rome over Ascoli Piceno to the Adriatic coast at Porto d' Ascoli. The nearest motorway exit Roma Nord is on the A1 Autostrada del Sole in 31 km distance.

The nearest train station is in Stimigliano on the railway line Rome - Florence 38 km away.

History

From the 4th century BC, a temple of the Sabine is known, the Feronia was consecrated. The construction of the Via Salaria and the integration into the Roman Empire the town was Trebula Mutuesca. Located just west of the Roman town was built in the Middle Ages the present town, which was first mentioned in 943 as leonem Montanianum.

On April 24, 1944 a massacre of the German Wehrmacht fell 11 innocent citizens victimized.
