Poggio Catino

Poggio Catino is a municipality with 1339 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the province of Rieti in the Italian region of Lazio.

Geography

Poggio Catino is located 63 km north of Rome and 30 km southwest of Rieti. The community consists of two medieval villages, and Poggio Catino Catino next to each other are located close to the slopes of Mount Tancia in the Sabine mountains. In the valley lies the village gala Tina. The municipality covers an altitude difference of 66-768 m slm Poggio Catino is a member of the Comunità Montana Sabina IV Zona.

The municipality is located in the seismic zone 2 (medium endangered).

The neighboring municipalities are Cantalupo in Sabina, FORANO, Monte San Giovanni in Sabina, Poggio Mirteto, Roccantica and Salisano.

Traffic

The nearest motorway exit is Ponzano Soratte on the A1 Autostrada del Sole, 17 km. The nearest railway station is located in Poggio Mirteto Scalo at the regional railway line FR1, 11 km away.

History

Catino was founded by the Lombards late 7th century when the Duchy of Spoleto border security. In the Middle Ages it became an independent principality. A castle on the nearby Monte Moricone, Poggio Catino today, was first mentioned in 1072. In the 12th century the two places Catino and Poggio Catino could konstitionieren together as free commune, but was always under the supervision of a nobleman. 1614 - 1816 practiced the Olgiati from the rule. 1853 Poggio Catino was charged with Catino as the district an independent municipality and belongs since 1927 to the province of Rieti.

Policy

Roberto Sturba ( civil list) was elected in June 2009 for the mayor. He won the election against his predecessor Walter Ferzi.

  • The Castello di Catino, with its 20 m high pentagonal tower is the most visible landmark of the community.
