Poggio Mirteto

Poggio Mirteto is a municipality in the province of Rieti in the Italian region Latium, located about 5940 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012). It is 54 km north of Rome and 32 km southwest of Rieti. It is the seat of a bishopric suburbicarian.

The name means hill of myrtle.

Geography

Poggio Mirteto situated on a hill in the Sabine mountains. It is a member of the Comunità Montana Sabina. The municipal area extends from the Sabine mountains to the Tiber River which forms the western boundary.

The districts are Castel San Pietro, Poggio Mirteto Scalo San Luigi and San Valentino.

The nearby towns are Filacciano (RM ), FORANO, Montopoli di Sabina, Poggio Catino, Salisano, Torrita Tiberina (RM ).

Poggio Mirteto located 18 km from the exit Ponzano Romano - Soratte at the A1 motorway Autostrada del Sole from Rome to Milan. His station on the regional train line FR1 from Rome Fiumicino Airport via Tiburtina Rome to Orte, located 7 km from the center in the village of Poggio Mirteto Scalo.

History

Poggio Mirteto located in the center of the ancient settlement area of the Sabines. In ancient Roman times emerged in the municipality some villas and country estates, but no towns. Only in the 12th century, the rural population joined together in fortified places. The Farfa Abbey, built on the hill of Poggio Mirteto a castle to protect her sphere of influence.
