Torri in Sabina

Torri in Sabina is a municipality with 1235 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the province of Rieti in the Italian region of Lazio.

Geography

Torri in Sabina is 64 km north of Rome, 36 km west of Rieti, and 30 km south of Terni. It is located in the Sabine mountains on the border between Umbria and is a member of the Comunità Montana Sabina.

The municipality covers an altitude difference of 123-706 meters above sea level. The municipality consists of the villages of Rocchette and Santa Maria in Vescovio.

The municipality is located in the seismic zone 2 (medium endangered).

The neighboring municipalities are Calvi dell 'Umbria (TR ), Cantalupo in Sabina, Casperia, Montasola Montebuono, Selci, Tarano and Vacone.

Traffic

Torri in Sabina is situated on the state road SS 313, which connects the Via Flaminia near Terni with the Via Salaria at Passo Corese.

The nearest motorway exit is Ponzano Romano, 17 km off the A1 Autostrada del Sole.

The nearest train station is in Stimigliano at the regional railway line FR1, 13 km.

History

Southwest of the present-day village was the ancient city of Forum Novum. She was after 415 bishopric of Sabina. From it there are remains on the road to visit after Stimigliano. The medieval castle of Torri was founded in the 13th century.

Attractions

The church of Santa Maria in Vescovio, the old Episcopal Church of Sabina comes mainly from the 11th century.
