Petrella Salto

Petrella Salto is a municipality in the province of Rieti in the Italian region Latium, located about 1192 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012). The village is located about 70 km northeast of Rome.

Geography

The place is located above the Salto reservoir surrounded by the mountains of Abruzzo Reatinischen in the valley of the Salto. He is a member of the Comunità Montana Salto Cicolano.

The municipality comprises the villages of Borgo San Pietro, Capradosso, Castel Mareri, Cerreta, Colle della Sponga, Collerosso, Diga Salto, Fiumata, Offeio, Oiano, Pagliara, Petrella Salto, Piagge, San Martino, Staffoli and Teglieto.

History

The territory has been inhabited since ancient times. However, these were to scattered farmsteads. Only with the threat posed by the Saracens in the 9th century, the population was concentrated in villages easier to defend. Here in today's first district Capradosso, and later in Petrella and Staffoli. From the 12th century, the area was ruled by the Mareri family from which the well-known abbess Philippa Mareri emerged, San Pietro founded a Klarissinenkloster in the district of Borgo. Attractions

  • The Rocca di Petrella castle was first mentioned in 1170. From the ruins today you have a wide view of the Saltotal.
