John L. McMillan

John Lanneau McMillan ( born April 12, 1898 in near Mullins, South Carolina, † September 3, 1979 in Florence, South Carolina) was an American lawyer and politician (Democratic Party).

Career

John Lanneau McMillan was born on April 12, 1898 on a farm near Mullins, South Carolina. He attended the Mullins High School, the University of North Carolina, and the University of South Carolina Law School and National Law School in Washington, DC.

McMillian was elected to the 76th U.S. Congress and re-elected in the subsequent sixteen U.S. Congresses. He served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 3 January 1939 to 3 January 1973. During his re-election attempt in 1972 in the 93rd U.S. Congress, he suffered a defeat.

During his tenure, he was involved in 1956 the Constitution of the Southern Manifesto, which spoke out against racial integration in public institutions. In addition, he was elected as a representative of the U.S. Congress to represent it in the Interparliamentary Union in London in 1960 and in Tokyo in 1961. He was also Chairman of the Committee on District of Columbia ( 79th, 81st, 82nd and 84th to 92nd Congress ).

John Lanneau McMillan passed away on September 3, 1979 at his estate in Florence, South Carolina. He was buried in the family cemetery in McMillian Mullins.
