John Spratt

John McKee Spratt, Jr. ( born November 1, 1942 in Charlotte, North Carolina) is an American politician. From 1983 to 2011 he represented the state of South Carolina in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

John Spratt visited until 1960 the York High School in York (South Carolina). By 1964, he then studied at Davidson College in North Carolina. In the following two years until 1966, he continued his education at the University of Oxford in England. Until 1969, he then studied at the Yale University law. Between 1969 and 1971 he served as Captain member of the U.S. Army. He worked as a staff officer in the Ministry of Defense of the United States.

In the following years Spratt practiced in a community law firm as a lawyer. He was also president of a local bank. In addition, he ran a small insurance agency and operated a farm. Politically, Spratt joined the Democratic Party. In 1964 he was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in Atlantic City, on the U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson was nominated for another term. Between 1972 and 1980 he was a delegate to the regional Democratic Party days in South Carolina.

1982 Spratt was in the fifth constituency of South Carolina in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC selected. There he entered on January 3, 1983 to succeed Kenneth Lamar Holland. During this time he represented as a rule, the positions of his party. In 1992, the 27th Amendment to the Constitution was adopted. Spratt was a member of the Armed Services Committee and in three of its subcommittees. He was also Chairman of the Budget Committee. On January 3, 2011, he resigned from the Congress.

John Spratt is married to Jane Stacy, with whom he has three daughters. The couple has five grandchildren. Private family lives in York.
