2003 World Men's Handball Championship

The 18th World Handball Championship for men was held in Portugal from January 20 to February 2, 2003. A total of 24 teams entered in the preliminary round and main round, first in groups against each other. This was followed by qualifying matches for the semi-finals and finals and placement matches for places three through eight. World Cup 2003 Croatia to a 34:31 victory in the final against Germany.

Schedule

Were equal on points on completion of the group matches of the preliminary round and the main round teams, so a direct comparison was by points between these teams, the first decision criterion for table formation. Resulted therefore the scores are equal between the teams, it was decided as the second criterion, the goal difference, which resulted from the matches played among the teams with each other. Resulted after a point- and Torverhältnisgleichheit, the third differentiation criterion was the number of goals scored in the matches played among the teams with each other.

Preliminary round

The preliminary round was held from January 20 to January 26, 2003. The first four of each group qualified for the main round.

Main Round

The main round was held from January 29 to February 2. In the main round of 16 teams playing in four groups of four.

These two teams each of the groups A and B were dissolved in the main round group I, the four remaining teams formed group II Analog to put the main round groups III and IV from the preliminary round Group C and D together.

Each team played in the main round only against two new opponents. The result of the game, the teams who've been hit on each other in the first round, was acquired.

The first teams of each main round group qualified for the semi-finals, while the runners-up positions five to eight playing off.

It played the runners-up of the main draws in two games against each other. The winners of these games then playing for 5th place, the two losers for 7th place
