Avilley

Avilley is a commune in the French department Doubs in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Avilley is located at 245 m, 11 km northwest of Baume- les -Dames and about 28 km northeast of the city of Besançon (air line). The village stretches along the creek Crenu on the eastern edge of the Talniederung Ognon, amid the rolling countryside in the extreme northwest of the Doubs.

The area of ​​5.62 km ² municipal area comprises a portion of Ognon Valley. The western boundary runs along the Ognon, the large river bends here flows through a flat Talniederung, which is about one kilometer wide. Below the village flows the Crenu, which ensures the drainage of a large part of the municipality of soil. It is fed by the two sources Source du Seigneur and source of the Serfs. From the river Ognon, the municipality's area extends east across the broad flood plain in a gently undulating landscape on both sides of Crenu that is passed partly under arable and meadow land, and partly by forests. To the north is the vast forest area Bois du pagre, in the 295 meters, the highest elevation of Avilley is achieved.

Neighboring communities of Avilley are Montbozon in the north, and Montussaint Tallans in the east, Battenans -les -Mines and Cendrey in the south and Ollans, Maussans and Besnans in the West.

History

Several findings indicate that the municipality of Avilley was already inhabited during the Gallo- Roman period. Since the 12th century Avilley made ​​a rule, which has undergone numerous changes of ownership until the French Revolution. Together with the Franche -Comté reached the village with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678 definitively to France. The medieval castle was rebuilt in 1775, but 1793 already destroyed again.

Attractions

The church of Saint -Symphorien was rebuilt in 1727-1729 on the site of an earlier building. In the village some traditional farmhouses dating from the 18th and 19th centuries have been preserved. On Ognon is a mill from the early 19th century.

Population

With 176 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Avilley one of the small communities of the department of Doubs. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (1886 318 persons were still counted ), a slight population growth was recorded since the early 1990s again.

Economy and infrastructure

Avilley was until well into the 20th century a predominantly by agriculture (crops, orchards and livestock ) and forestry embossed village. The water power of the Ognon was used early for the operation of mills. Even a brick had its location in Avilley. Today there are various businesses of the local small business sector and the retail trade. Meanwhile, the village has also changed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who engage in the agglomeration Besançon their work.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a secondary road that leads from Besancon to Rougemont. The nearest links to the A36 motorway is located at a distance of about 17 km. Further road links exist with Maussans and Mésandans.
