Behren-lès-Forbach

Behren- lès -Forbach is a commune with 7847 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Moselle in the Lorraine region. It belongs to the district Forbach, based on the 2002 Local Government Association ( Communauté d' agglomà ) Forbach Porte de France and is the capital of the canton of Behren- lès -Forbach.

Geography

The municipality of Behren- lès- Forbach is located near the border with Germany, three kilometers southeast of the city Forbach and about ten kilometers south of Saarbrücken.

Neighboring communities of Behren- lès -Forbach are Etzling in the northeast, Kerbach in the east, Bousbach in the south, Folkling the southwest, Œting in the west and Forbach in the northwest.

History

In a document of the German Order of the Commandery Saarbrücken from July 8, 1301, the village was first mentioned as Bern.

Demographics

From the late 1950s created for the workers of that time flourishing coal and steel industry, numerous housing estates, as well as the suburbs called suburban -like settlement in Behren northwest of the old village. The population rose in a few years to twenty times. Many workers were recruited from North Africa, especially Algeria, whose descendants are not integrated today in the society. The social tensions and problems occurred overt inter alia in riots in 2005. Since the decline of the coal and steel industry, the population numbers are declining.

Attractions

The schedule established settlement has to have a few sights. A mine locomotive as a symbol of the coal mining industry is now on a circular traffic island. In the old village is the St. Blaise Church ( Église Saint -Blaise ).

Economy and infrastructure

Immediately southwest of Behren is with a 1500 hectare Technopole Forbach -Sud one of the largest industrial areas in north-eastern France.
