Belau

Belau is a municipality in Schleswig -Holstein hills in the district of Plön.

Geography and location

Belau is located on the eastern shore of Lake Belau, 5 km southeast of the community falter village and 25 km south of the city of Kiel.

History

Belau is first mentioned in 1264 as belowe; the name derives from the Slavic terms for "swamp " or a "shiny silver " back.

The community Belau originated in 1928 at the dissolution of the estate districts, as the former rural community of Belau ( 571 ha) with 208 inhabitants and the Gutsbezirk Perdöl (917 ha) was combined with 181 inhabitants to the new municipality of Belau.

The population of the municipality doubled after the Second World War due to the influx of expellees, went into the second half of the 20th century, but by various resettlement back to a number of about 320 back.
