Brolo

Brolo is a municipality in the Province of Messina in the Italian region Sicily, with 5888 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012).

Location and data

Brolo is located 79 km west of Messina on the coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea. The inhabitants mainly work in agriculture ( citrus fruits, cereals and wine), shipbuilding and light metal industry.

The districts are Piana, Iannello, Lacco, Sellica, Malpertuso, Lake, filandes, S. Anna, Parrazzà and Casette. The neighboring municipalities are Ficarra, Naso, Piraino and Sant'Angelo di Brolo.

History

To the medieval castle Lancia, the city developed. Until the 17th century Brolo was an important port. In the years 1593 and 1682 the town was buried by torrents and the entrained flotsam.

Events

On the first Sunday in September they celebrate the festival of fire ( Luminaria di Luccu ). The festival is dedicated to a statue of the Madonna, which was not destroyed during a fire.
