Itala, Sicily

Itala is a city in the province of Messina in the Italian region Sicily, with 1647 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012).

Location and data

Itala located 23 km southwest of Messina. The inhabitants mainly work in agriculture.

The neighboring municipalities are Alì, Alì Terme, Fiumedinisi, Messina and Scaletta Zanclea.

History

The founding date of the place is unknown. From 1928 to 1947 Itala was a district of Scaletta Zanclea.

Attractions

The parish church dates from the 16th century, inside there is a wooden crucifix from the 14th century. The Church of the Madonna della Catena is in Borgo district, striking is the bell tower. The church of Santi Pietro e Paolo ( Itala ) was founded in 1093 by Count Roger. She was a Greek monastery church. The interior consists of three naves, with the choir is higher.
