Leni
Leni is a city in the province of Messina in the Italian region Sicily, with 686 inhabitants (as at 31 December 2012).
Location and data
Leni is located on the south coast of the Aeolian island of Salina. The inhabitants mainly work in agriculture and summer tourism. More jobs are available in the fishery.
Salina can be reached by ferries and hydrofoils from Milazzo Messina or the port to Santa Marina Salina. In the summer time there are also links to Cefalù, Naples and Vibo Valentia.
The neighboring municipalities Leni's Salina Island are Malfa and Santa Marina Salina.
History
The island of Salina, and thus the place Leni were inhabited in prehistoric times.
Attractions
North of the village Leni is the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Terzito. It is the oldest Marian shrine of the Aeolian Islands. The church was built in 1622 on the foundations of an ancient Roman temple and thoroughly renovated from 1901. At the feast days of Our Lady solemn processions take place.
