Scaletta Zanclea

Scaletta Zanclea is a city in the province of Messina in the Italian region Sicily, with 2208 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012).

Location and data

Scaletta Zanclea located 17 km southwest of Messina and consists of the districts Scaletta Marina, Scaletta Superiore, Guidomandri Marina and Guidomandri Superiore. The inhabitants mainly work in agriculture and industry in Messina.

Zanclea Scaletta is located on the A18 / E45 motorway, the next exit is called Messina Sud / Tremestieri and is about 13 km away. From Scaletta Zanclea station the train runs 40 minutes after 20 minutes after Catania Messina and Taormina about 1 hour.

Borders the following municipalities: Itala and Messina.

History

The oldest district Scaletta Superiore was built around the castle from the 16th century.

On 1 October 2009 and Scaletta Zanclea was severely affected by landslides due to a natural disaster affected; more than 30 people were killed.

Attractions

  • The Castle of the Ruffo family, princes of Scaletta, in the district Scaletta Superiore, built from the 13th to 17th centuries (see picture) with historical collections.
  • The Church of San Nicolò of the 17th century

In the flooding disaster of 2009, the culturally and historically valuable Palazzotto Ruffo was destroyed in the village of Scaletta Marina.
