Casalvecchio Siculo

Casalvecchio Siculo is a municipality in the Province of Messina in the Italian region Sicily, with 882 inhabitants (as at 31 December 2012).

Location and data

Casalvecchio Siculo located 40 km southwest of Messina. The inhabitants mainly work in agriculture ( wine, olives and cereals).

The neighboring municipalities are Antillo, Castro Reale, Forza d'Agro, Furci Siculo, Limina, Sant'Alessio Siculo, Santa Lucia del Mela, Santa Teresa di Riva and Savoca.

History

In ancient times Casalvecchio Siculo was a small town. Calatabieth called the community to Arab times. From the 9th century to the 18th century the village belonged to Savoca. In the period 1928-1939 Casalvecchio Siculo was a district of Santa Teresa di Riva. Since that time, the community is self-employed.

Attractions

The church of Sant ' Onofrio dates from the 16th century. Next to the church of Sant ' Onofrio is the Church Museum.

Near the river Agro Basilica Santi Pietro e Paolo is from the Norman period. The church has three naves with two domes. Outside the church the lava stone harmonized well with the tuff.
