Pettineo

Pettineo is a city in the province of Messina in the Italian region Sicily, with 1399 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012).

Location and data

Pettineo is 166 km away to the west of Messina and 97 kilometers east of Palermo at the foot of Monte San Cuono in Valle dell'Halaesa ( Halaesa or Alesa Valley ). The inhabitants mainly work in agriculture. The nearest motorway junction is Tusa on the A20 (Italy) and is 11 km from Pettineo away.

Borders the following municipalities: Castel di Lucio, Mistretta, Motta d' Affermo, Reitano, San Mauro Castel Verde ( PA) and Tusa.

History

Pettineo was first mentioned in the 13th century, when Manfred of Sicily the place, then imputed under the name Casale Pectineum, Manfredi Maletta. After the Sicilian Vespers was Frederick II of Aragon to place in the hands of Alan Franco di San Basilio. 1332 was the church over to the County of Geraci Siculo. In the early years of the 14th century castrum was built around the small group of houses ( Casale ). In the 15th century the Migaido was built a fortress, whose thirteen -meter high tower still exists today as a ruin. In the 20th century the city suffered heavy emigration. While at the beginning of the century were still resident by more than 3,000 residents in the village, there are at present less than half.
