Calvi dell'Umbria

Calvi dell 'Umbria is a municipality with 1850 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the Province of Terni in the Umbria region of Italy.

Geography

The municipality covers 46 km ². It is located about 100 km south of the regional capital of Perugia and about 25 km south of the provincial capital of Terni in the climatic classification of Italian communities in the zone D, GR 2095 / G. It is the southernmost municipality of the province of Terni and thus also the southernmost municipality of Umbria.

The districts include Poggiolo and Santa Maria della Neve.

History

The place was already inhabited during the Bronze Age. After the Romans formed under the name Carbium settlements, but the place was only developed further in the High Middle Ages. Was first mentioned in writing in 1036 under the name Calvi fundus Carbinianus. In the 11th century the town was under the abbey Abbazia di Farfa from Fara in Sabina. In the 13th century Calvi fell under the domination of Narni, then the place became a free commune in the Papal States, the Calvi the Orsini, later then presented as a fief of the Anguillara. From the 12th century until 1860 belonged to the castle of the place of the diocese of Narni. The place is mainly known for its Christmas cribs, the oldest is in the church of Sant'Antonio and includes thirty ceramic figures of the 16th century, the da Monte Reale come by brothers Massimo and Raffaele.
