Christopher Robinson (Rhode Island)

Christopher Robinson ( born May 15, 1806 Providence, Rhode Iceland, † October 3, 1889 in Woonsocket, Rhode Iceland ) was an American politician. Between 1859 and 1861 he represented the first electoral district of the state of Rhode Iceland in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

After primary school, Robinson studied until 1825 at Brown University in Providence. After a subsequent study of law and its made ​​in 1833 admitted to the bar, he began practicing in his new profession in Woonsocket. In 1854 he was elected Attorney General of the State of Rhode Iceland.

Robinson was a member of the Republican Party, founded in 1854. In 1858, he was as their candidate in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he Nathaniel B. Durfee replaced on March 4, 1859. But since he lost already at the next elections against William Paine Sheffield, he was able to complete only one term in Congress until March 3, 1861. This period was overshadowed by the discussions and events leading up to the Civil War.

The newly elected President Abraham Lincoln appointed Robinson to the U.S. ambassador to Peru. This office he held until 1866. In 1866, Robinson was a delegate to a meeting of loyalists who had remained loyal to the just-ended Civil War the Union. Christopher Robinson was married to Louisa Robinson ( 1819-1853 ). He died on 3 October 1889.
