Henry J. Spooner

Henry Joshua Spooner ( born August 6, 1839, in Providence, Rhode Iceland, † February 9, 1918 ) was an American politician. Between 1881 and 1891 he represented the first electoral district of the state of Rhode Iceland in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Henry Spooner attended the public schools of his home and thereafter until 1860, the Brown University in Providence. Then he began to study law, but he interrupted due to the civil war in which he participated as a soldier in the Union. After the war he was admitted in 1865 as a lawyer. He then practiced this profession in his hometown of Providence. In 1877 he became head of the Veterans Administration of the Union Army ( Grand Army of the Republic) in Rhode Iceland. Politically, he was a member of the Republican Party. Between 1875 and 1881 Spooner was a deputy in the House of Representatives from Rhode Iceland; 1879 to 1881 he was president of that body.

Following the resignation of Congressman Nelson W. Aldrich Spooner was elected at the election due to his successor in Congress. After he was confirmed in the following regular elections each in its mandate, Spooner could remain between 5 December 1881, 3 March 1891 at the Congress. From 1889 to 1891 he was chairman of the Committee on Accounts. In the elections of 1890 he lost to Oscar Lapham of the Democratic Party.

After the end of his time in Congress Spooner again worked as a lawyer. In 1902 he was again elected to the House of Representatives from Rhode Iceland. Henry Spooner died in February 1918 in his hometown of Providence, and was also buried there.
