Nathan B. Durfee

Nathaniel Briggs Durfee ( born September 29, 1812 in Tiverton, Rhode Iceland, † November 9, 1872 ) was an American politician. Between 1855 and 1859 he represented the first electoral district of the state of Rhode Iceland in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

After primary school, Nathaniel Durfee worked in agriculture and especially in the area of fruit cultivation. He was eleven years a member of the House of Representatives from Rhode Iceland. Politically, he joined the American Party, which was also known under the name of Know-Nothing Party. In 1854 he was appointed as their candidate in the first district of Rhode Iceland to Democrat Thomas Davis in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC selected. There he met on March 4, 1855 to his successors. During his ongoing until March 3, 1857 first term in Congress, he joined the Republican Party, founded in 1854. As the candidate he was confirmed in 1856 in his mandate. This Durfee was able to complete in Congress until March 3, 1859 two legislative sessions. He was the first Republican of Rhode Iceland represented there as a deputy. His entire time in Congress was determined by the discussions and events leading up to the Civil War.

After the end of his political activities in the federal capital Durfee worked back in his old job as a fruit farmer. In 1860 he was a delegate to the Republican National Convention in Chicago, at the Abraham Lincoln was nominated as presidential candidate of the party. Later Durfee was further administrative officer ( County Clerk ) in Newport County. This office he held until his death in 1872.
