Clark Burdick

Clark Burdick ( born January 13, 1868 in Newport, Rhode Iceland, † August 27, 1948 ) was an American politician. Between 1919 and 1933 he represented the first electoral district of the state of Rhode Iceland in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Clark Burdick attended the public schools of his home. He then studied 1893-1895 at the Law Faculty of the Harvard University law. After qualifying as a lawyer, he began in Newport to work in his new profession. Burdick has been renowned in the banking business and became president of the Newport Trust Co. From 1896 to 1897 he was a member of the maritime militia of Rhode Iceland. Between 1899 and 1901, was a member of the School Board of Newport Burdick. From 1901 to 1908 he was several times intermittently lawyer of this city.

Politically, Burdick member of the Republican Party. From 1906 to 1908 he sat in the House of Representatives from Rhode Iceland; In 1912 he was a delegate to the Republican National Convention in Chicago. Between 1906 and 1916 Burdick also belonged to the city council of Newport, whose chairman he was. In the years 1915 and 1916 was Burdick member of the state Senate before he was 1917-1918 Mayor of Newport.

1918 Burdick was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, where he succeeded the Democrat George F. O'Shaunessy on March 4, 1919. After he was confirmed in the following six choices each in its mandate, Burdick could remain until March 3, 1933 Congress. In the 1932 elections, he was defeated by Democrat Francis Condon. This benefited from a nationwide trend in favor of his party, who as U.S. president culminated in the election of Franklin D. Roosevelt.

After the end of his time in Congress Burdick again worked as a lawyer and returned to his banking transactions. Politically, he has had no further posts. He died in August 1948 at the age of 80 years and was buried in Portsmouth.
