Dutee Jerauld Pearce

Dutee Jerauld Pearce ( born April 3, 1789 Prudence Iceland, Newport County, Rhode Iceland, † May 9, 1849 in Newport, Rhode Iceland ) was an American politician. Between 1825 and 1837 he represented the second electoral district of the state of Rhode Iceland in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Dutee Pearce attended Brown University in Providence until 1808. After a subsequent study of law and qualifying as a lawyer, he began to work in Newport in this profession. He also held several local offices. Between 1819 and 1825 Pearce officiated as Attorney General of Rhode Iceland. From 1824 to 1825 he was still Attorney General in that State.

Politically, he joined the opposition to Andrew Jackson and became a member of the National Republican Party, which later became the Whig Party. Pearce was first deputy in the House of Representatives from Rhode Iceland. In the congressional elections of 1824, he was against the incumbent Job Durfee in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC selected. After he was confirmed in each case at the next elections, he was able to complete six legislatures in Congress between 4 March 1825 and 3 March 1837. In this time, the political confrontation with the policy of President Jackson fell. It dealt with were the Nullifikationskrise with the State of South Carolina and the banking policy of the President. Between 1827 and 1831 Pearce was Chairman of the Committee on Revisal and Unfinished Business.

In the elections of 1836 Pearce lost to Joseph L. Tillinghast. After he retired from politics.
