Emblem of Ethiopia

The Seal of Ethiopia is in this form since 1996 in use.

Description

The seal represents a golden pentagram with five golden rays on a blue disk Represents the pentagram represents the unity of the peoples and nationalities of Ethiopia.

History

The pentagram is, according to the tradition back to the seal of King Solomon, who plays a special role for the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, as they apply the ancient Ethiopian emperor as descendants of Solomon and the Queen of Sheba. The Last Emperor Haile Selassie referred to himself as 225th successor to the son of the Queen of Sheba.

The older coat of arms of Ethiopia showed the Lion of Judah, also a recourse to Christian traditions. The origin of the lion probably goes back to the legendary Prester John. He appeared in the coat of arms of the Empire and in the three seals of the Republic.
