Erlach Castle

The Erlach Castle is a castle in the town of Erlach in the Canton of Bern.

History

Around 1100 the counts of Fenis bought the place and began to fix it. Burkhart of Fenis built in the early 12th century the castle. Erlach was an important stronghold of the Counts of Neuchâtel. In 1265 Erlach was awarded the Tangible by Count Rudolf II of Neuchâtel - Nidau ​​. 1474 fell to Bern Erlach and the castle became the seat of the Bernese bailiff. Under the sheriffs at Castle Erlach there were also well-known personalities such as Niklaus Manuel German ( Governor 1523-1528 ) and Johann Rudolf Sinner of Ballaigues ( Governor 1776-1781 ). From 1874, the castle was a state reformatory.
