Wangen an der Aare Castle

The cheeks castle by the river is a castle in the town of Wangen an der Aare in Berne.

History

The castle was probably built during the 13th century by the Kyburgs and served as Bailiff's Castle and the protection and control of the major Aareübergangs and was a customs and arrival point for the Aareschifffahrt. 1313 Hartmann and Eberhard von Kiburg received the castle and city walls as a fief of Duke Leopold III. of Austria. 1406 sold the Counts of Kyburg the place with all the fief to the city of Bern. Berne use the castle as the seat of his bailiffs to the French invasion 1798. 1687 the castle was substantially rebuilt by the bailiff Beat Fischer and received its present appearance. Today the castle houses the government governorship.
