Wittigkofen Castle

The Wittigkofen Castle is a country house in the town of Bern in Berne.

History

Originally, the castle was a farm, which was awarded by the Zähringians fief to their followers. The earliest documented liege was in the middle of the 13th century Heinricus de Wittenchoven. 1271 bought a religious community, the property of Henry of Seedorf, and in the following years there were several changes of ownership. In 1570 the castle was purchased by the Bernese Schultheissen Beat Ludwig von Mülinen. 1580 burned parts from the castle. During the French invasion, the castle on 5 March 1798 devastated and plundered by French troops. At times, the headquarters of the defenders of the ancien régime was in it. The general staff of the opponents of the new Helvetic Republic let himself temporarily down here. The castle is several times mentioned in the narratives of Rudolf von Tavel.
