Festival of Political Songs

The festival of political song was one of the biggest music events in the GDR. It was established in October Club and took place in February every year as an official event of the FDJ in East Berlin between 1970 and 1990. The main organizer was initially the FDJ district headquarters Berlin, from 1975, the FDJ Central Council. 1980, a compilation of the first 10 years of the festival under the title decathlon was - Festival Of Political song published 1970-1980. In the same year a full-time office was established " festival of political song ." The organization of the festival was largely honorary. Artists from 60 countries ( between 50 and 80 artists, artists and groups from 30 countries ) occurred, including celebrities such as Mikis Theodorakis, Miriam Makeba, Quilapayún, Inti - Illimani, Silvio Rodriguez, Mercedes Sosa, Canzoniere delle Lame and Pete Seeger. The first festival was held until February 21, 1970 by 15.

After the collapse of the GDR, the festival lost its function and the cultural infrastructure on which it was based. To continue the festival, a development association was founded, the intermediate world festival conducted as a "new Festival of Political Song " from 1991 to 1994. The club dissolved in 1995 due to financial problems.

In 2000 a small festival to restart under a different banner. Today's thematic orientation manifests itself since 2001 in the new name of festival music and politics.

Mascot of the festival was a red sparrow called Oki. The name is derived from Oki Oktoberklub.
