FIBA Asia Championship

The basketball Asia Championship for Men ( officially: FIBA Asia Championship ) is discharged by the World Federation FIBA Asia Continental Championship in basketball. The championship has been held since 1960, will do so in every two years and is also the Asian qualifying tournament for the FIBA World Championships or the Olympic Games.

By 1975, the selection of the Philippines dominated the competition. In that year, however, the Philippine Basketball Association was founded, making the best Filipino players were professionals and were therefore no longer approved for Asia Cup ( this restriction was lifted only in 1989 ). In addition, the team of the People's Republic of China had joined FIBA in the previous year and won 15 of the 19 sweeps since then, the already qualified for the Olympics as host China in 2007 just sent a B- team. In this staging won with Iran for the first time a team from the Middle East competition.
