Ghana national football team

The Ghanaian national football team (nicknamed the Black Stars ) is the selection of Ghanaian football players of the Ghana Football Association ( GFA ) at the international level, for example in friendly matches against the national teams of other national associations, but also at the African Cup of African continental federation CAF or the World Cup FIFA represented.

The HFA selection is one of the most successful national football teams of the African continent. Already eight times she stood in the final of the African Cup of Nations. Four times (1963, 1965, 1978 and 1982 ) was the Ghanaian team to win the title, as many times (1968, 1970, 1992 and 2010), she went as Vice - African champions from the square. These even get a third (2008) and a fourth place three times (1996, 2012, 2013 ). With a total of 19 Africa championship appearances the team is in this respect behind Egypt and Ivory Coast in third place.

The team was able to qualify for a World Cup in October 2005 for the first time. During the World Cup the following year the selection under coach Ratomir Dujković survived as the only African team to the first round, and it failed only in the second round in Brazil.

After a successful qualifying for the first World Cup on African soil (2010) they met in the preliminary round in Group D, among others, the German national football team. The first game against Serbia was won 1-0 in the second game they reached a 1-1 draw against Australia. Both goals were scored by penalty, which Ghana is the first team that has reached the knockout stages of a World Cup only through penalty goals. Because, despite a 0-1 defeat in their final group game against Germany, the Black Stars have qualified for the second time in a row for the knockout stages, where they met the USA and won after extra time 2-1. In the quarterfinals, Ghana met the two -time world champions Uruguay. The game won Uruguay 4-2 in a penalty shootout ( 1-1 after extra time ). During the World Cup the team was supervised by the Serb Milovan Rajevac.

In addition, the junior teams of the GFA could celebrate great successes: The U -17 (nicknamed the Black Starlets ) was in the years 1991 and 1995 World Champion, the U-20 national team (nicknamed the Black Satellites ) could win the World Cup title in 2009. In addition, the U -23 (nicknamed the Black Meteors ) achieved a third place at the 1992 Olympic Games. In 2005, the national team was honored by the world governing body FIFA titled Newcomer of the Year.

After 1988, the national team no longer participated in the Olympics. The Olympic team won the bronze medal in 1992, reached the quarter-finals in 1996 and retired in 2004 from the previous round.

The national team at World Championships

Since 1962, Ghana takes part in the qualifications for the World Cup. For the World Cup in Germany 2006, the team was able to qualify for the first time and reached the second round, where the Black Stars of the Brazilian team documents. On November 19, 2013, Ghana failed to qualify for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. After the group victory against the national teams from Zambia, Sudan, Lesotho and the Black Stars reached thanks to a 6-1 victory and a 1-2 defeat against Egypt became the fourth African participant the World Cup finals.
