Grosse Scheidegg

The Grosse Scheidegg is the pass which connects Grindelwald valley in the Black Lütschinen with Meiringen in Haslital (Aare ). The pass is at 1'962 m above sea level. M. below the Wetterhorn. On the north side of the ridge rises to the Black Horn.

On the Grindelwald side of the Scheidegg concludes the broad basin. The view of the valley and the surrounding rock walls of the Wetterhorn, Eiger and Schreckhorn is impressive. On the northern side of the pass can only be reached through the narrow Reichenbachtal.

Since 1979, there is a continuous road link over the Grosse Scheidegg. Between Schwarzwaldalp (from Meiringen accessible by post bus ) and Upper Grindelwald Glacier is a regular traffic with the Grindelwald Bus. Private car traffic is allowed only for residents and hotel guests with permission. This makes the Grosse Scheidegg has become a popular destination for cyclists. In 1996, the Tour de Suisse for the first time over the Grosse Scheidegg.

At the summit there is an eponymous hotel for tourists and hikers. In winter, are offered by the Grosse Scheidegg to Schwarzwaldalp partly sleigh rides.

In contrast to the Kleine Scheidegg is the Grosse Scheidegg less high ( 99 meters lower ), less well developed and less visited. The Great in the name refers probably to the greater importance: the transition to Haslital was in older times more important for Grindelwald compared to the pass to Wengen and Lauterbrunnen Valley, which was easier to reach on the other route.
