Hamont- Achel ( Limburg: Haëmet -Achel ) is a Belgian town in the north of the Flanders region with 14,225 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2012). It lies directly on the border with the Netherlands and consists of the two districts and Achel Hamont who have banded together in 1977 to the present-day city.

Eindhoven is located 20 kilometers north, 36 km south of Hasselt, Maastricht 45 km south-southeast of Brussels and about 90 kilometers south-west. The next highway exits are located at Budel and Maarheeze on the Dutch motorway A2 / E 25 In Neerpelt and in the Dutch town of Weert offers the nearest regional stations.

The airport of Eindhoven and Maastricht Aachen Airport are the nearest regional airport and close to Brussels, there is an international airport.

History

On November 18, 1918 two unexploded ammunition trains in place. The explosions also met three ambulance trains, which led back German troops from the front during the First World War. In addition, sections were destroyed by Hamont. The disaster claimed over 1000 lives.
