Herma Szabo

Herma Szabo ( born February 22, 1902 in Vienna, † 7 May 1986 as Admont ) was an Austrian figure skater. She was in a single run Olympic gold medalist and five-time World Champion and twice World Champion in pair skating with partner Ludwig Wrede. After the end of her skating career she participated in competitions in Alpine skiing.

Herma Szabo was born in 1902 in Vienna into a family of great figure skating tradition. Her mother was Christa Szabó, who won at the World Championships in 1913 and 1914 with Leo Horwitz bronze medal in pairs skating. Christa by Szabó was the sister of Eduard Engelmann Jr., the European champion from 1892 to 1894 and built the first artificial ice rink in the world. So Herma Szabo grew early on with the figure skating and coached on the ice rink of her uncle along with her ​​cousins ​​Helene Engelmann, who later became Olympic champion and world champion in pair skating and Christine Engelmann, the future wife of multiple Olympic gold medalist and world champion Karl Schäfer.

Herma Szabo launched both in a single run as well as in the sport pairs with Ludwig Wrede, who later became President of the Austrian Skating Association. She was the dominant figure skater of the twenties and the most successful Austrian figure skater in history.

In a single run was from 1922 to 1927 six times in a row Austrian champion. During the same period, she participated in the World Championships. 1922 to 1926 it was the fifth consecutive World Champion. At the Olympic Games in 1924 in Chamonix, she won the gold medal.

In pair skating, she joined with Ludwig Wrede. They were in 1925 and 1926 Austrian Champion and 1925 and 1927 World Champion. In 1926 she won bronze.

Herma Szabo ended her career after the World Cup 1927 in Oslo, where she was behind Sonja Henie only came second after they had performed significantly even after the compulsory figures. The result was controversial, as three judges came from Norway, one from Germany and one from Austria. The three Norwegians put Henie in the first place, the other two judges Szabó, just as they proceeded with Henies countrywoman Karen Simensen who won so before Ellen Brockhöft bronze. This disillusioned Szabó and it never ran again. Henie later offered her a new edition of the duel, but she refused. After the end of her figure skating career Szabó 1928 began with the alpine skiing. She started for the Ski Club Arlberg which achieved top 10 rankings on the Austrian Championships in 1932 and 1934, including a victory in the snow mountain race in 1932. During the same year she reached at the internationally strongly occupied fifth Arlberg - Kandahar race in St. Anton am Arlberg ninth in the downhill, seventh in the slalom and thus eight place in the combination.
