Huesca

Huesca [ Weska ] ( Aragonese Uesca ) is the capital of the Spanish province of Huesca, located in the Autonomous Region of Aragon. It has 52 418 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013), making it the second largest town in Aragón.

Geography

Huesca is located on the River Isuela. The city lies at an altitude of 488 msnm and has a continental Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and cold winters. The distance to Zaragoza is about 70 km, after Madrid, about 380 km.

History

In the 1st century BC was Osca (old name of Huesca) a Roman settlement. It was also the residence of the Roman general and politician Sertorius, who first founded a school for noble Spaniard here, but in 72 BC murdered here wurde.Seit 713 was the place owned by the Arabs. The city came again under Christian violence in 1098 and became the seat of their conqueror Pedro I.. From 1096 to 1118 the city was then the capital of the Kingdom of Aragon.

Under Napoleon Huesca was occupied by French troops. During the Spanish Civil War, the opponents fought for two years for supremacy of Huesca.

Structures

  • The Gothic cathedral from the 13th century high altar. Here influences mix of Gothic and Renaissance. Integrated is the Diocesan Museum.
  • The Church of San Pedro el Viejo, Romanesque cloister.

Each year there is a festival in honor of the patron saint San Lorenzo. In addition, the city was the birthplace of Vincent de Valencia.

About 30 km away is the castle Loarre (Castillo de Loarre ) with a checkered history.

Economy and infrastructure

Huesca is located on the railway line Zaragoza Canfranc. About nine miles southeast of downtown airport Huesca- Pirineos (Aeropuerto de Huesca -Pirineos, ICAO: LEHC ), the terminal region on the international air traffic.
