Composition

Lennon wrote the song in a camp for Transcendental Meditation, as he could not sleep. The Beatles had currently retired just to Rishikesh in India to meditate with the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. After three weeks of permanent meditation and lectures Lennon began to miss his girlfriend Yoko Ono. He was plagued by insomnia, which inspired him to write this song. Lennon later reported: "One of my favorite songs. I like his sound, and I sing it very well. "

The theme of insomnia is adjacent to an older song by Lennon: I'm Only Sleeping, which appeared on the album Revolver.

Recording

In May 1968, an early demo version of I'm So Tired in George Harrison's estate in Esher was taken. Essentially, this version is similar with regard to the text of the later studio version, but it contained a spoken passage, as it is already heard in Happiness Is a Warm Gun:

"When I hold you in my arms, When you show me, each one of your charms, I wonder should I get up, and go to the funny farm. No, no, no! "

Probably this passage was improvised, as it was never used again.

On 8 October 1968, the Beatles recorded the song in London's Abbey Road Studios on in only one recording session, including all overdubs. During the same session was also started recording for the song The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill. On the mono mix of the backing vocals by Paul McCartney is louder than listening to on the stereo mix.
