James Allen (U.S. Senator)

James Browning Allen ( born December 28, 1912 in Gadsden, Alabama, † June 1, 1978 in Gulf Shores, Alabama) was a Democratic United States Senator from the state of Alabama.

Biography

After attending the University of Alabama and the training of judges Allen worked 1935-1968 as a prosecutor in his home town of Gadsden. As early as 1935 he was a member of the House of Representatives from Alabama, but interrupted in 1942 all of its obligations to do as a member of the United States Navy reserve his service in World War II. After his return to the United States in 1946 Allen was until 1950 in the Senate of Alabama, before 1951, he was appointed vice- governor. His first legislative term ended in 1955. Eight years later, Allen was again appointed lieutenant governor and served until 1967 in this position.

In 1968, Allen was elected Senator 3rd Class and moved as a member of the Democrats on November 5, 1969 in the Congress a. His election in 1974 reaffirmed. During his tenure, Allen was a conservative Democrat who was an active opponent of the Torrijos -Carter Treaties.

After his sudden death at the age of 66 years his wife Maryon was determined to be his successor in the Senate. He is buried in Gadsden.
