Joseph Hall (Maine)

Joseph Hall ( born June 26, 1793 in Methuen, Essex County, Massachusetts, † December 31, 1859 in Boston, Massachusetts ) was an American politician. Between 1833 and 1837 he represented the state of Maine in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Joseph Hall attended the public schools of his home and then the Andover Academy. In 1809 he moved to Camden, at that time still belonged to Massachusetts, where he was successfully engaged in trade. During the British - American War of 1812, he rose in the militia of Massachusetts from ensign to up to colonel. In 1821, Hall was appointed deputy police chief in Lincoln County. In 1827 he was chief of police in the newly Waldo County. Between 1830 and 1833 he was postmaster in Camden. Politically Hall was a supporter of President Andrew Jackson. He was a member of the Democratic Party, founded by this.

In 1832 he was in the sixth electoral district of Maine in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC selected. There he entered on March 4, 1833, the successor to Leonard Jarvis, who moved into seventh district. After a re-election in 1834, Hall was able to complete in Congress until March 3, 1837 two legislative sessions. These were determined by the heated debate surrounding the policy of President Jackson. During his time in the House of Representatives Hall was chairman of the committee responsible for supervising the expenditure of the Navy Department.

After the end of his time in the U.S. House of Representatives Hall returned to Camden. There he was in the years 1837 and 1838 again postmaster. Between 1838 and 1846 he was employed by the Federal Customs Authority at the port of Boston. After that he worked there until 1849 as a Navy Agent. In 1849, Joseph Hall ran unsuccessfully for the office of Mayor of the City of Boston. Then he acquired a farm in Camden, which he managed until 1857. After that he was rehired by the Customs Administration in Boston. In this city he has also died on 31 December 1859. He was buried in Camden.
