Kostajnica, Bosnia and Herzegovina

Kostajnica ( Serbian Cyrillic Костајница; previously Bosanska Kostajnica; German outdated Castanowitz ) is a small town of about 6,300 inhabitants in northwestern Bosnia and Herzegovina. It lies on the right bank of the Una River, a tributary of the Sava and belongs to Republika Srpska. On the opposite bank of the Una, which marks the borders with Croatia, is the town of Hrvatska Kostajnica. At the time of the Austro- Hungarian Empire were both parts of the city Kostajnica.

The name Bosanska Kostajnica was amended on 9 April 2009 in the name Kostajnica by the Parliament of Republika Srpska. This city is not to be confused with the place Kostajnica near Doboj.

Geography

Kostajnica lies on the northern slope Kozaračko mountains whose western part here rises up to 466 m.

Traffic

The site crosses the National Road 14 ( Novi Grad - Kozarska Dubica ). On the border bridge to the neighboring Hrvatska Kostajnica is an international border crossing. A side road leads through the mountains to the Kozaračko 37 km away Prijedor. The nearest railway station is in Hrvatska Kostajnica.
