Lignéville
Lignéville is a commune in the Vosges department in the Lorraine region. It belongs to the district Neufchâteau, the Canton of Vittel and the Local Government Association, Pays de la Saône Vosgienne.
Geography
The 314 inhabitants (1 January 2011 ) scoring Lignéville community located four kilometers south of the spa town of Vittel and 45 kilometers west of Epinal in the southwest of Lorraine.
The 12.5 km ² large municipality of Lignéville extends in the region of Monts Faucilles on the watershed of the river basins of the Meuse and the Rhone. In the municipality of Ruisseau de Bellefontaine, which drains through the Petit Vair Vair and the upper Meuse rises. Only about 40 hectares of community land area is forested, the majority of the area is used for agriculture.
Neighboring communities of Lignéville are Vittel in the north, Thuillières in the east, Saint- Baslemont the southeast, Provenchères -lès -Darney and Viviers- le-Gras in the south, Dombrot -le -Sec in the southwest and Contrexévillenear in the northwest.
History
Place name
The name is of Latin Lignéville ( Gallo-Roman ) origin. It is composed of the prefix lignum (wood) and villa ( estate). Over the centuries, the town name was changed several times. For the year 1030 Legisvilla is detected. About Lyenivillae ( 1124 ), Lygnevilla (1402 ) and Ligniville (1594 ), the name became the common since the 18th century Lignéville. The local knights of the von Lignéville kept in some branches the name Ligniville.
