List of castles and palaces in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern

On the territory of the German state of Mecklenburg- Vorpommern is a variety of palaces, castles and manor houses. This partly retrospective on a 1000 -year history buildings were historic moments, workplace well-known personalities and are often still imposing building.

Former residences

In a narrower sense, only the former residences of the Mecklenburg and Pomeranian Dukes ' Castle ', they are served as the official residences of the rulers. Other designated as castles buildings are usually inhabited by noble or non-noble landowners estates called manors and mansions. The total investments with outhouses and the hosted site be designated as a farm. See section: The Castle called manors

In the Duchy of Mecklenburg -Schwerin castles acted in Gustrow, Ludwig desire Dargun and Schwerin as ducal residences. The castle in Dargun is available only as a ruin. In the Duchy of Mecklenburg -Strelitz, there were the residences Hohenzieritz and Neustrelitz, the latter having been wiped out after the Second World War by arson and subsequent demolition. The today belonging to Brandenburg Fürstenberg Castle was built as a widow seat of Mecklenburg Duchess Sophie Dorothea.

Castle Ueckermuende, Ludwigsburg Palace and Castle Pudagla are remaining Pomeranian residences in Germany today. The Wolgast castle was destroyed several times and disappeared completely in 1820 from the cityscape. In today's Poland, the obtained grip locks in Szczecin and Rügenwalde can be visited.

As a castle called manors

In a narrower sense, only the former residences of the Mecklenburg and Pomeranian Dukes ' Castle ', they are served as the official residences of the rulers.

Other designated as castles buildings are usually noble goods or estates of non-aristocratic landowners lived in manor houses and mansions. The total investments with outhouses and the hosted site be designated as a farm. About 2000 such plants there are in today's Mecklenburg -Vorpommern yet.

This list is incomplete. Sometimes the estates are entitled only recently as a lock, for example, after an extensive renovation.

Outbound ruins and monuments

Above all, the war's aftermath, 1945, there was looting, arson and wanton destruction of manor houses. Politically motivated breaks in GDR times (eg lock Putbus ) and land reform destroyed or disfigured also many of the once magnificent buildings and their surrounding systems (eg through land allocation in former Gutsparkanlagen ).
