Marhanets

Marhanez (Ukrainian Марганець; Russian Марганец / Marganec ) is a city on the right bank of the Dnieper ( Kachowkasee ) in Ukraine, Dnipropetrovsk Oblast and has about 47,000 inhabitants ( 2013). The city is an important center for the mining and processing of manganese ore. The town's name translates as manganese.

Geography

The municipality consists of the town Marhanez, the urban-type settlement Marjiwka ( Мар'ївка ) and the settlement Maxymiwka ( Максимівка ). Marhanez is located 93 km south of Dnepropetrovsk Oblasthauptstadt and 21 km northeast of Nikopol.

History

The city was founded in 1938 by the merging of several workers' housing.

On 12 October 2010 there was a serious traffic accident between a commuter bus and a train, which was located on the railway line Zaporizhia - Marhanez. In this 40 people who were on the bus, killed.
