Merlscheid

Merlscheid is a municipality in the district of Bitburg -Prüm, in Rhineland -Palatinate. She is a member of the collective municipality.

Geographical location

The place is located in the western Eifel at the mouth of Merlbaches in the Prüm. The town is located on a hillside at an altitude 360-390 meters.

History

On the opposite side of the Prüm settlement remains from Roman times. First records of the town was in 1459 as " Merhelscheit ".

Merlscheid belonged to the end of the 18th century condominium Pronsfeld, which was under the joint sovereignty of the Electorate of Trier and the Duchy of Luxembourg.

Parish council

The local council in Merlscheid consists of six council members, who were elected at the municipal election held on 7 June 2009, by majority vote, and the honorary mayor as chairman.

Attractions

At a yard of 1857 include a bakery and a blacksmith shop, which were probably built in the 17 century. The inside of the box forge dates from the time of the First World War and is completely preserved.

In the municipality there are three shaft crosses found from the years 1774, 1777 and 1808.

In a landmark Natural Monument is a 350 year old almost completely hollow oak that still bears leaves.

Economy

The community lived in the past, mainly from agriculture. From formerly eight full -time farmers, however, are only two left. The current problems are forcing farmers to specialize or to change to a sideline.
