Metropolitan Borough of Lewisham

The Metropolitan Borough of Lewisham was a district in the metropolitan area of the British capital London, with the status of a metropolitan borough. It existed from 1900 to 1965 and was in the south of the former county of County of London.

History

The district was created by the former individual Civil parishes Lee and Lewisham. They were originally in the county of Kent and belonged from 1855 to the catchment area of the administration union Metropolitan Board of Works. 1889 came the municipalities to the new County of London, eleven years later, they were together with a small part of Camberwell combined to form a metropolitan borough.

At the foundation of Greater London in 1965 arose from the merger of the Metropolitan Boroughs of Lewisham Deptford and the London Borough of Lewisham.
