Muñecas Province

Muñecas is one of twenty provinces of the Bolivian department of La Paz and is located in the western part of the department.

Name

The province is named after the caudillos Idelfonso de las Muñecas who fought during the war of independence for Upper Peru ( Alto Perú ). With its establishment on 18 October 1826, the province was given this name.

Location

The province is located on the eastern slopes of the Bolivian Cordillera Real and is bordered to the west by the province of Heliodorus Camacho, on the south by the province Omasuyos, on the east by the province Larecaja, and north to the province of Bautista Saavedra.

The province extends from about 15 ° 08 'and 15 ° 48' south latitude and 68 ° 26 ' and 69 ° 00'W, it measures 65 km from north to south, from east to west and 40 kilometers.

Population

The population of the province Muñecas has risen significantly in the decade before the turn of the millennium and has stagnated since then:

The literacy rate in the province is 68.6 percent, and that 80.1 percent of men and 56.4 percent for women.

The infant mortality rate is 8.5 per cent ( 1992) and 8.6 percent ( 2001) remains high.

40.3 percent of the population speak Spanish, 63.3 percent speak Aymara, Quechua and 35.2 percent. (2001)

97.0 percent of the population have no access to electricity, 84.6 percent have no sanitary facilities ( 2001).

48.4 percent of households own a radio, a TV 0.5 percent, 4.9 percent, a bicycle, a motorcycle 0.2 percent, 0.3 percent a car, 0.2 percent a refrigerator, a 0.1 percent phone. (2001)

81.1 percent of the population are Catholics, 10.3 percent are Protestant (1992).

The Muñecas Province is divided into the following three counties ( bolivian: municipios ):

  • Municipio Ayata - 12,125 inhabitants (Update 2010)
  • Municipio Aucapata - 4,049 inhabitants
  • Municipio Chuma - 18,143 inhabitants
