Novouralsk

Novouralsk (Russian Новоуральск ) is a closed town in Sverdlovsk Oblast (Russia) with 85 522 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

Novouralsk is located in the south of Sverdlovsk Oblast on the European side of the Ural Mountains, 67 km north- west of the regional capital Yekaterinburg. The nearest towns are Werchni Tagil (17 km north-west of Novouralsk ) and Kirowgrad (20 km north).

The city is situated on the upper reaches of the river Neiwa from the river system of the Ob.

History

Novouralsk was created in 1941 as an industrial complex in the construction of a factory for light alloys. During the Second World War, an aircraft factory from the European part of the Soviet Union was evacuated here.

In 1946, in Novouralsk the construction of a factory for the production of highly enriched uranium for nuclear weapons. Thus, it was Pervouralsk important center for the nuclear industry in the Urals. Because of those high strategic importance it was declared a closed city and given the code name Sverdlovsk -44, which was used until 1994.

The factory was taken as the Ural Electrochemical Combine 1949 in operation.

This facility is also after the collapse of the Soviet Union still active, so Novouralsk until today has the status of a closed city. Entering the city limits is for this reason only with a special permit possible.

Economy

The core of the industry of Novouralsk forms the electrochemical state combine for the production of highly enriched uranium. Other important holdings are the truck engine factory AMUR, the boat factory VIZA yacht and window factory Nowouralski DOC.
